Special Thanks
Metro Umpires would like to thank Major League umpires (and former Metro Umpires), Tim Tschida and Jeff Nelson, for conducting a training clinic for Metro and St. Paul Municipal Athletics umpires on February 23rd. It's not often that new and veteran umpires have the opportunity to interact and receive instruction from a Major League umpire, let alone two of them. Metro Umpires is proud of our alumni, especially Tim, Jeff and Mark Wegner. Metro would also like to thank our senior umpires who assisted Tim and Jeff throughout the day. Thank you all for a job well done. Let the season begin!
2009 Season
Planning is underway for the 2009 baseball and softball seasons. Please get your Independent Contractor Agreements and Availability Calendars into the Metro Office ASAP. If you haven't registered with the State High School League, please do so now. Go to MSHSL.org for information about rules interpretation meetings in your area. If you are a new umpire and are looking for used equipment, drop us an email and we'll try to connect you with someone who has some.
George "Butch" Fisher
On August 1st, Metro Umpires lost one of our greatest umpires and closest friends, Butch Fisher. Butch was responsible for the development of almost every veteran member of Metro Umpires as well as three current Major League umpires. We will miss his guidance, advocacy and baseball stories. Breakfast with the trainers prior to umpire clinics won't be the same without Butch. As a tribute to Butch, all Metro Umpires will wear the number 10 (Butch's retired Metro number) on their uniforms next year.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Metro umpires, Keith Esala and Bob Niemiec, on their selection to work the state baseball tournament. Both Keith and Bob worked two semi-final games for the AA Championship in St. Cloud.
